PENETRON Helps Expand Transportation Hub in Southern Chile

Chile

The new bus terminal that opened in September in Puerto Montt, Chile, is located in a wet climate, adjacent to the Pacific Ocean and exposed to heavy bus traffic. PENETRON crystalline technology helped master this challenging construction scenario with an optimal solution for impermeable and durable concrete.

A port city in southern Chile, 1,055 km (655 miles) south of the capital, Santiago, Puerto Montt is at the northern end of the Reloncaví Sound. With a population of over 178,000, the city is an important transportation junction for the region.

With a surface of 32,000 m2 (344,500 square feet), the expanded Puerto Montt bus terminal was designed by architect Alberto Martin Nieto Kauak and the engineers at SIVEC, and the construction project was led by Salfacorp. The new, larger facility improves terminal services and will help accommodate even more passengers in the future, beyond the current one million every month.

“The expanded facility can now better accommodate the increased bus traffic on a network that connects both the south and north of Chile and the vast areas of Patagonia in Argentina,” explains Jozef Van Beeck, Director, International Sales & Marketing of The PENETRON Group. “The new construction demanded a proven waterproofing solution that would also provide the durability needed to withstand the constant traffic.”

Added at the ready-mix plant, PENETRON ADMIX was used to treat all concrete for the building’s foundation, below-grade perimeter walls and the main slab. PENEBAR SW-45 waterstop was used on all construction joints and PENETRON crystalline waterproofing material was surface-applied to the main slab to reinforce the impermeability of the PENETRON ADMIX-treated concrete.

“The city’s new bus terminal is on the waterfront, only a few meters from the sea,” adds Mr. Van Beeck. “The region’s wet, rainy climate and high water table at the construction site were made-to-order for PENETRON crystalline technology.”
