A very Happy New Year to all our readers. As we usher in a new phase we are happy to welcome you to another edition of the Penetron INDIA newsletter. Over the past few years, designers of concrete structures have traditionally focused on the strength and characteristics of the material. However in recent years, the industry has adopted a more holistic approach to a structure by emphasizing on its overall life-cycle cost. Hence the durability of concrete is now viewed as equally important as its mechanical properties and initial cost. It is estimated that in developed countries about 40 percent of total construction resources are used for repair and maintenance, and 60 percent for new construction. Apart from the socio-economic implications of durability, there is also a clear link between durability and the environment. Extending the life cycle of construction materials leads to conservation of valuable natural resources. Read on ‘The durability of concrete’ in the Penetron Feature.

Concrete Show India 2012

India is the 2nd fastest growing economy in the world. The Indian construction industry is an integral part of the economy and a conduit for a substantial part of its development. Construction is the 2nd largest economic activity after agriculture. Construction accounts for nearly 65 per cent of the total investment in infrastructure and is expected to be the biggest beneficiary of the surge in infrastructure investment over the next five years. Investment in construction accounts for nearly 11 percent of India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Penetron effectively saves the Fermilab’s Tevatron Tunnel

Fermilab’s circular Tevatron tunnel (a primary instrument for high-energy physicists to learn what the universe is made of and how it works) at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory was faced with the problem of water infiltrating the particle accelerator tunnel wall and endangering millions of dollars of equipment and research. Located more than 300 feet underground with a circumference of four miles, the tunnel was constructed in 1985 using a shotcrete process which following 20 years of stellar service, began to show some wear. Groundwater began penetrating into the tunnel walls, jeopardizing both the equipments and the ongoing experiments.

Fermilab is home to Tevatron, once the most powerful particle accelerator in the United States and the second most powerful particle accelerator in the world. Fermilab needed to identify a product that could work under a unique set of conditions and was effective on damp concrete surfaces, applied against a head of water pressure and be able to work on rough and uneven shotcrete surfaces. Penetron’s unique technology to waterproof concrete by growing millions of insoluble crystals within the natural pores of concrete proved to be the right solution. The growth of the crystals occurs even in the face of extreme head pressures (up to 514’) and becomes a permanent part of the concrete. Once moisture penetration is stemmed, Penetron remains dormant in the concrete. Should further moisture reappear, Penetron reactivates to continue the waterproofing process, sealing hairline cracks that might have also been formed.

By using a combination of products, Peneplug (for rapidly stopping active leaks), Penecrete Mortar (for filling cracks and crevices) and Penetron (for slurry coat applications), the leaks were quickly, effectively and successfully stopped. It was recommended that in future in case of shotcrete construction, Penetron Admix should be incorporated into the fresh concrete to produce a waterproofed tunnel from the beginning.

Penetron's extensive work on tunnel projects and varied set of solutions for different construction and design conditions make the Penetron system a high performance, time effective and cost effective solution for tunnels, both new and old.

Penetron® Feature
Durability of Concrete

Water is a primary agent for both creation and destruction of concrete and is deeply involved in nearly every form of concrete deterioration.

Field experience shows that in order of decreasing importance, the principal causes for concrete deterioration are the corrosion of reinforced steel, exposure to cycles of freezing and thawing, alkali-silica reaction and chemical attack. Due to these causes, the permeability and the presence of water is implicated in the mechanisms of expansion and cracking. By ensuring that concrete is waterproof not only on the surface, but in-depth too; one can prevent the main causes of deterioration. Penetron products are integral waterproofing agents that deliver just that.

  • Penetron prevents the corrosion of steel by preventing chemicals from entering the concrete, helping to maintain an alkaline environment.
  • Penetron prevents damage from freeze-thaw by drying out concrete in-depth.
  • Penetron prevents alkali-silica reaction by denying the reaction the water needs.
  • Penetron prevents chemicals from entering the concrete by sealing the capillaries and pores.

Incorporating Penetron products in concrete dramatically increases its durability. In concrete terms, the design life of the structure is extended, besides enabling huge savings on repair and maintenance.

Penetron® Projects in India
Techno Park Phase III, Trivandrum, Kerala

Owned by the State Government of Kerala, this IT Park has been designed by Mumbai based Architect Hafeez Contractor. Being an IT Park, the clients have housed all the services like power generators, cooling plant and other control rooms in the basement. The scope of work awarded to Penetron was the waterproofing of the basement, UG Tank and the STP, totaling to 17000sqm quantum of work. While L & T are the main contractors of the project, the structural consultants are Trivandrum-based Iyer & Mahesh.

I –Gate Hotel, Bengaluru

The high water table was the major concern for designers in the ongoing construction of the I-Gate Hotel in Bengaluru owned by I-Gate Hotels. The solution was a waterproof structure which was found with the Penetron waterproofing system. The work was restricted to the basement and incorporated 8000sqm of area to be waterproofed. Cecon Engineers and Mumbai headquartered DSP Consultants are the main contractor and structural consultants of the project respectively.


Application of Penebar SW waterstop

Huawei Tech Park, Bengaluru

The Huawei Tech Park owned by China-based Huawei Technologies is an upcoming IT Park in Bengaluru. The aim of the project as envisaged by the clients and the architect was to make it lean and green. Huawei Tech Park is a time-bound project that did not allow any compromise in quality. Penetron Waterproofing System was thus used for the basement over 40,000sqm of area. Penetron products ensure time and cost savings which enabled the project to be a lean construction project. Further Penetron products contain zero VOC content and are Green Label-certified by the Singapore Environmental Council. This fact enabled the project to qualify as a Green project. While DSP Consultants are the structural consultants for the project, Ahmedabad-based JMC Projects (India) Ltd are the main contractors.

Apollo Reach Hospital, Chennai

The famed Apollo Hospital Group is coming up with Apollo Reach Hospital in Chennai. Penetron has been entrusted with the waterproofing of the basement and water retaining structures below the ground level with a total area of 8000sqm. Nominated by the clients and the contractors (Larsen & Toubro Ltd, ECC division), Penetron was asked to waterproof both the positive and negative sides. RSP Bangalore is the architect while Chennai based Buro Engineers Pvt Ltd is the structural consultants of the project.

MIOT Hospital International Block, Chennai

In the MIOT Hospital International Block located in Chennai and owned by MIOT Hospitals, an absolute waterproof basement with no water ingress was required since expensive medical equipment was installed in the basement. The Penetron System was selected for the waterproofing of the basement and UG Tank with a total area of 10000sqm. The basement waterproofing has already been completed. While Larsen & Toubro Limited- ECC Division were the main contractors, L&T EDRC were the structural consultants.

The positive and negative side treatment

Q. What is the basic difference between positive and negative side treatment?
A. The positive side treatment: The waterproofing treatment is carried out on the side of the concrete that directly faces the hydrostatic pressure. Some examples of positive side treatments are:

  • Outside of the retaining wall of a basement.
  • Inside of the base & wall of a water tank.
  • Treatment below the raft of a basement before laying the raft.

The negative side treatment: The waterproofing treatment is carried out on the opposite side of the hydrostatic pressure (i.e. against the hydrostatic pressure. Some of the examples of negative side treatments are:

  • Inside of the retaining wall of a basement (i.e. already backfilled retaining walls).
  • Outside of the base & wall of a water tank.
  • Treatment on the raft surface of a basement after laying the raft.
