Oceanside Protection - Thanks to PENETRON

Brazil

Completed just in time for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games that concluded last week, the Hotel Grand Hyatt features a stunning location and waterproof basement structures treated with PENETRON technology.

The Hotel Grand Hyatt is located in Barra da Tijuca, or “Barra,” one of the most exclusive districts in Rio. It is also close to the most renowned districts of Rio de Janeiro: Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon, and it is only a 50 minute drive by car from Rio’s Galeão International Airport. This luxury beachside hotel has 436 rooms, including 40 suites and three large penthouse suites, a spa and gym in the basement, and a pool. The total construction area of this LEED-certified project was 84,200 m² (906,322 square feet).

Built adjacent to both a lagoon and beach, the structure is subjected to a very high water table. One of the design features was a very large underground structure sitting below the water table. PENETRON Brazil, working with the contractor, provided an optimal solution to treat all the concrete joints and the basement slab. PENEBAR SW-55 expandable waterstop was used to permanently seal the new construction joints, while PENETRON ADMIX was used to treat the concrete in the slab.
