Waterfront Miami Tower Chooses PENETRON

USA

The August 2018 official opening of the Aria on the Bay luxury condo tower introduces a distinctive addition to the burgeoning Miami skyline. Penetron crystalline technology is a substantial part of the story.

A high-rise luxury residential tower designed by Arquitectonica Architects, the Aria on the Bay condominiums overlook Biscayne Bay and Miami. At a height of 535 feet (163 m), the project is not only one of the tallest residential buildings, but also sets new standards in luxury and contemporary design for in the Miami region. The 52-story tower offers 650 luxury apartments and 40,000 square feet (3,700 m2) of commercial space in the lower floors, including office, retail, and restaurant space at the ground level.

Creating a Durable Below-Grade Concrete Structure

“This showcase project on Biscayne Bay, with its extreme height and seaside location, also features a deep below-grade structure that needed absolutely secure foundation elements to ensure durability,” adds Christopher Chen, Director of The Penetron Group. “Our crystalline technology was the ideal waterproofing solution.”

The challenge of the high groundwater level at the construction site was compounded by the chloride ions in the seawater, a major cause of concrete deterioration. CEMEX, the ready-mix supplier, treated all concrete used for the elevator pits with PENETRON ADMIX to ensure a durable below-grade concrete structure.

Permanent Concrete Protection – and Self-Healing Capability

Easily mixed in during batching and unaffected by climatic conditions, PENETRON ADMIX becomes an integral part of the concrete matrix. It is permanent, lasting for the life of the concrete, and provides a self-healing capability that will seal any cracks that appear later on. This crystalline admixture is designed to protect concrete in critical environments, like the construction site located adjacent to Biscayne Bay.

“As recent results have shown, concrete treated with PENETRON ADMIX can last up to 60 years longer than conventional concrete,” says Mr. Chen. “It’s the perfect fit and a major reason why Miami’s Aria on the Bay chose Penetron technology.”
