World’s Largest Dome Structure Built on PENETRON Technology
The new Singapore Sports Hub, a US$1.3 billion, 86-acre sports complex built on the site of the original National Stadium in Kallang, Singapore, opened its doors this summer. The PENETRON System was chosen to ensure optimal durability of all concrete structures.
The new complex not only upgrades the previous National Stadium with a 55,000-seat multi-purpose facility that accommodates soccer/rugby, cricket, and other athletics events, it also includes:
- Indoor Aquatic Center (6,000-seats)
- Multi-purpose indoor arena (3,000-seats)
- Kallang Wave Shopping Mall (41,000m2 of commercial space) on the waterfront
- Water Sports Centre on the shores of the Kallang Basin, with playground, hard courts, a skate park, lawn ball, giant chess set, rock climbing, and beach volleyball
- Sports Information and Resource Centre (SIRC), with a library, sports museum, and an exhibition center
Adaptable Design – and Green
“The new National Stadium – with its retractable roof – is the centerpiece of this amazing project,” says Jozef Van Beeck, International Sales & Marketing Director of The PENETRON Group. “It is the largest free-spanning structure in the world and it can be adapted to host concerts, soccer and rugby matches, cricket, and athletic events. There is also a retractable roof to make it an all-weather facility.”
The facility was designed with an emphasis on sustainability. The PENETRON System is approved by the Singapore Environmental Council (SEC) with the Singapore Green Label. Used throughout the project to ensure durability, PENETRON technology was included in all below-grade concrete, as well as the parking garage, aquatic center, and the waterfront mall.
Durability Increases Concrete Service Life
“In recent tests, PENETRON technology has been added to achieve key properties – low permeability, low shrinkage, self-healing, and protection against chemical attack – that enhance concrete durability in critical environments,” notes Van Beeck. “This can add up to 60 years or more to a variety of concretes, including CEM II /B-P, CEM II / B–S and CEM III/A, before the onset of corrosion.”
PENETRON Admix was used in approximately 55,000m3 of base slab and retaining walls. PENEBAR SW-55 waterstops were installed in over 18,500 meters of construction joints. In addition, 16,000 square meters of internal wet areas and exposed concrete, including the reinforced concrete roof, were treated with PENESEAL PRO.
