A Crystalline Waterproofing Solution for the Texas City Crystal Lagoon

USA

In August 2020, the first of 14,000 residents moved into their new homes at the Lago Mar Texas City community. Penetron crystalline technology was used to waterproof the beach area of the community’s enormous artificial concrete lagoon.

Located about 45 miles (72 km) southeast of Houston, Texas on the shores of Galveston Bay, Lago Mar Texas City is a planned community with approximately 4,000 homes, several lakes, open areas, parks and walking trails spread across 2,033 acres.

The centerpiece of the new community is the 12 acre Crystal Lagoon that lies in the middle of Mar Lago Texas City’s entertainment district. The Lagoon includes multiple white sand beaches, a floating obstacle course, a swim-up bar, and an integrated beach club with a cabana pool. The Crystal Lagoon concept combines an innovative design of an artificial lagoon with a low environmental impact water treatment technology.

“The underlying concrete structure of the Crystal Lagoon at Lago Mar Texas City must withstand constant contact with water,” says Christopher Chen, Director of The Penetron Group. “It’s a tailor-made application for Penetron crystalline technology.”

Sealing Cracks Against Water Penetration

Once applied to the prepared concrete surface of the beach slabs along the Crystal Lagoon, the chemicals in PENETRON penetrate deep into the concrete matrix and react in a catalytic reaction to generate a non-soluble crystalline formation throughout the pores and capillary tracts normally found in concrete. This formation permanently seals microcracks, pores and capillaries against the penetration of water or liquids from any direction, substantially reducing the permeability of usually porous concrete.

A PENETRON slurry was applied to the surface of the Crystal Lagoon’s beach area along the Ploy Lock system to help prevent water penetration.

“Penetron crystalline technology was also used as a waterproofing solution for the inaugural Crystal Lagoon project in central Florida*,” adds Christopher Chen. “By enabling a striking layout of beachfront homes, restaurants and recreational facilities around a large, man-made lagoon, the Crystal Lagoons concept highlights not only a new community lifestyle – but also the effectiveness of Penetron crystalline technology.”
