Penetron Ensures Restored Yeyks Dam is Impervious to Saltwater

Russia

The latest phase of repair and modernization of the port of Yeysk in Krasnodar Krai, Russia was completed in July 2021. Penetron crystalline technology was specified to restore and repair the port’s breakwater and provide long-term protection from the saltwater environment for the reinforced concrete structures.

Situated on the Yeya Spit, a peninsula surrounded by the Sea of Azov (Black Sea), Yeysk is a port in Krasnodar Krai, Russia. The town of about 84,000 inhabitants is home to important fishing and canning companies, and is also a well-known health resort, famed for the medicinal properties of its sulfur and mud baths.

The large-scale modernization of Yeysk’s port facility is being carried out by Port Vista, which includes expansion of the marina and repairs and expansion of the harbor breakwater to increase cargo shipping capacity at the port.

Protecting Concrete from Seawater

“In order to protect reinforced concrete structures from the destructive effects of aggressive seawater, the Yeysk town officials required a very reliable and robust waterproofing solution for the port’s concrete structures, which are constantly exposed to saltwater” says Larisa Motornaya, Director of Penetron-Don, the local Penetron representative.

The Penetron System was specified to waterproof the repaired harbor breakwater and the new concrete pier structures. The supply and application of the Penetron waterproofing materials was carried out by Penetron-Don.

Making Concrete Impermeable

Once applied to a prepared concrete surface, the proprietary chemicals in Penetron’s crystalline products react in a catalytic reaction with moisture to generate a non-soluble crystalline formation throughout the pores and capillary tracts of the concrete. The resulting formation seals pores and micro-cracks, and becomes an integral part of the matrix, making the concrete impermeable to chloride ions in saltwater that cause corrosion.

“Penetron-treated concrete has the added benefit of resisting corrosion damage often encountered in marine environments,” adds Larisa Motornaya. “This protection increases the lifespan of the concrete structure and reduces the amount of maintenance required in the future.”

The repairs and expansion of the Yeysk harbor breakwater on the Black Sea increased the port’s cargo shipping capacity.
