Penetron Provides Permanent Concrete Waterproofing in Centurion (RSA)

South Africa

The Irene Link Precinct, a comprehensive mixed-use development in Centurion (Gauteng), South Africa, was officially inaugurated in May 2021. PENETRON ADMIX was specified to provide an integral and durable concrete waterproofing solution for the development.

Irene Precinct is a wide-ranging, mixed-use development situated in the heart of the popular suburb of Irene (Centurion municipality), in Gauteng province, immediately southwest of Pretoria. In close proximity to the N1 highway, the Irene Link Precinct encompasses 100,000 m² of mixed-use development. The finished project is a wholly new, inter-connected community with residential, retail, educational and commercial areas.

Because of the area’s high-water table, DG Consulting, the project engineer, required a reliable concrete waterproofing solution for the numerous above- and below-grade concrete structures. “PENETRON ADMIX was specified to provide protection for all exposed concrete podium slabs to prevent concrete deterioration and water ingress. As an integral solution that lasts for the service life of the concrete, it was also used for areas where conventional waterproofing systems could not be applied,” adds Jonathan Whitehead, Technical Engineering Support at Penetron Africa.

Saving Time with an Integral Solution

Métier Mixed Concrete, the project’s ready-mix concrete supplier, provided the PENETRON ADMIX-treated concrete mix for all major concrete structures, including the below-grade elements – lift pits, foundation slabs, retaining walls – as well as the exposed ground floor and roof slabs (in conjunction with a conventional bitumen membrane roofing system) to ensure optimal concrete protection. Siyabangena Waterproofing, the Penetron-approved applicator, installed the PENEBAR-SW-55 waterstop strips along all construction joints, completing the Penetron waterproofing solution.

“As an integral solution, PENETRON ADMIX-treated concrete is maintenance free and has the ability to self-heal hairline cracks that may form in the future,” adds Jonathan Whitehead.
