Repairs to the damaged concrete structures of the South Urals Logistics Complex in the Chelyabinsk region were completed in October 2021. The Penetron System was applied to repair the reinforced concrete of the facility’s water tanks and other below-grade and exposed concrete structures, ensuring durability and resistance to moisture and groundwater penetration.
The South Urals Logistics Complex in the Chelyabinsk region is located at the intersection of the most important trade routes along the ancient Silk Road. As a key logistic and transit hub for incoming goods from China, the logistics facility is the initial distribution point to the largest Russian cities to the west: Yekaterinburg, Perm, Ufa, and Chelyabinsk.
Earlier this year, an inspection of the facility’s water storage tanks (used for firefighting), and other below-grade structures revealed the urgent need for extensive repairs of the reinforced concrete structures. The Tori Company was asked for a rapid and effective solution for the issues of water ingress and structural damage evident in the existing concrete structures.
“Unfortunately, because of the inferior quality of the existing concrete structures and the lack of any previous waterproofing measures, the deterioration of the concrete was already well advanced, even though the facility was comparatively new,” points out Evgeniy Vayenberg, Director of the Tori Company, the official Penetron distributor for the region.
Repairing Deteriorated Concrete
Working together with MedPromKhim, a construction company, the Tori Company specialists carried out the concrete repairs on the leaking below-grade concrete structures and the water storage tanks in the machinery room.
The repair work began with the repair team routing out all visible cracks and leaks and cutting back any exposed rebar stubs and deteriorated concrete. PENECRETE MORTAR, a crystalline waterproofing repair mortar, was then applied to fill the prepared areas. In a final step to protect the reinforced concrete water tank from future water penetration, PENETRON, a topical crystalline material, was applied as a slurry to permanently waterproof the concrete matrix. Both PENECRETE MORTAR and PENETRON were also used in combination to repair damaged below-grade concrete structures, and for several smaller repairs around pipes, cable inlets, construction joints, and tie-holes.
Easy to Apply Permanent Protection
Once applied to a prepared concrete surface, the proprietary chemicals in Penetron crystalline products react in a catalytic reaction to generate a non-soluble crystalline formation throughout the pores and capillary tracts of the concrete. These crystals permanently seal micro-cracks, pores, and capillaries against the penetration of water or liquids from any direction – making the concrete impermeable.
“The ease of application helped keep the repair work on schedule," adds Evgeniy Vayenberg. "This showed the facility managers how the Penetron System was the ideal solution to provide the much-needed waterproofing and durability for the South Urals Logistics Complex.”
