The well-known Voortrekker Monument, an imposing 80-m (260-foot) tall brick and concrete building on a hill overlooking Pretoria, commemorates the migration of the Afrikaners, or Boers. These descendants of Dutch settlers fled inland from Cape Colony, located on the tip of Africa, to find new farmland and independence from British rule.
Extensive renovation work was done on the underlying concrete structures originally completed in 1949. The concrete was cleaned and a layer of PENETRON slurry was applied over the concrete surfaces to provide a permanent waterproofing solution
